The author was born in Fort Collins , Colorado, where his mother and father met as undergrads at Colorado A&M. His father was one of a family of 17 from Cheyenne, Wyoming and his mother was third-generation pioneer with deep roots in Colorado.
He grew up in Colorado Springs halfway between normal city life and occasional cowboy life on ranches to the east and west of town. While he was never a cowboy for a living, he grew up in the midst of a culture of the old West that was resurgent in a hometown trying to find a balance between old and new in a booming post-war economy..
He went to school back East, got involved with rowing, attended grad school in England and spent the bulk of his career far away from Colorado and the ranching life. He and his wife, a professional photographer, now divide their time between world travels, Florida, Colorado, and kids and grandkids spread far and wide.
